Why is the church called the Pipeline?
Basically because we meet in an old gas station. Pipeline Church is located in historic downtown Humble, Texas. Humble is know for being a historic oil boomtown. Shallow oil production began in 1902 with a big oil gusher occurring in 1904. Humble became a tent city, overflowing with people as well as oil. Oil discoveries continued to mount. By 1905, the Humble oil field was the largest producing field in Texas. The Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon Co. USA) was formed by local entrepreneurs.
Today the Pipeline Church meets in one of the first gas stations in Texas (now Fuel Cybercafe), located on Humble's historic Main Street.
How did it all begin?
The Pipeline Church is a church plant that came out of two thriving outreaches of Buddy Hicks Ministries. In 2000 we built a half-pipe behind our old church building and we were not prepared for what happened next. That small ramp became one of the hottest skate spots in town. So we decided to take it to the next level and began working on the Humble Skatepark Project. In May 2002 we launched Humble Skatepark an 8,000 sq ft extreme skatepark in downtown Humble. Since opening we have seen over 4500 of Houston's most dedicated skaters and their families visit the park.
Simultaneous with the work that we were doing on Humble Skatepark we lauched Fuel Cybercafe (est. 2001) as a venue where local bands and people from the area could come and spend time. We soon recognized that Fuel was becoming a vital link in the North East Houston music scene. Not fully aware of where all of the bands were coming from, we soon realized we had tapped into a thriving music scene in the Houston area. Where Fuel made it's greatest impact was in offering up and coming bands a safe venue where they could play without having to jump through some of the political hoops of some other venues.
So what does all of this have to do with the Pipeline Church? Well in 2004 we launched the Pipeline Church with the intention of encouraging those we had made connections with through Fuel and the Skatepark to engage with their faith. And that's where we are today, we continue to serve our generation with the desire that they will recognize that God has a great purpose for them in history. If you are looking for a place to serve this rockstar and skateboard generation and their families, then come and check out what's going on at the Pipeline.
